Online Safety
PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM ONLINE ABUSE
We are all concerned with ensuring that our young people grow up with the right skills to enable them to navigate the online world safely and effectively. We know how intrinsically linked our lives are to the internet - and nowhere is this more apparent than in children and young people - so we need to be able to protect ourselves from the potential pitfalls and harm that can be experienced online. A joint approach between home and school is the best way to keep our children safe. Below are a series of resources that could be used at home to help support the message that pupils are getting in school and to help parents to have informed and empowered conversations about technology.

The UK Safer Internet Centre has many resources available to parents to support conversation with young people.
It also has some top tips for 11-18 year olds relating to becoming a critical consumer of online information - a vital 21st century skill.
Social Media is both a great tool to be mastered and utilised positively, but also a potential risk to young people. We work hard in school to educate pupils about the benefits and pitfalls of social media through PSHE lessons and assemblies. Still, we see some making mistakes - and it is no wonder - this is an area of growing up those warrants as much attention and guidance as any academic subject. Positive conversations at home about social media are believed to be helpful in this regard.
